Price Hike in the Philippines
75The Philippines is country found in Southeast Asia. A very rich country when it comes to its culture and practices. It is the 12th most populous country having an 11% of the population as foreign workers in the different places of the world. It was also been industrialized when it comes to its economy. But as 2008 comes, things were heading differently in its economic trend. As the first quarter of the year ends, shortage of rice came into scene. The government administration has been saying that there's no such thing as shortage but the reality in the market places says the opposite. Everywhere in the country people are falling in line to buy a 5 kls of rice for a family in a NFA subdealer stores. It is because commercial rice has increase tremendously in its price. NFA rice can be bought at Php 18.25 while commercial rice is at Php 32.00 more or less its the lowest price. How can an ordinary Filipino family could afford that having a monthly income lower than Php 5000. Not only the rice but the gasoline also has rise to 50 pesos per liter. Fuel is a must for businesses but price hike is unstoppable it keeps on going high. So, in effect all commonidities has a price hike to keep up with production expenses in producing them. Who suffers the most the Filipino people. The government keep on saying were on the right track for economic development, denying what reality had shown them. Development at common people's expense. Given that the prices cannot be controlled but is there any way to help people to cope up. Increase in wages or programs where the many can be able to generate income for their daily needs. Government must do something, not just reassuring people that there would be imported goods to come to avoid shortage. They should act, Filipino people are powerless in this matter, people in the position were in their places right now because people voted for them to act in these times. They are being paid with our taxes, they should be the one make a step to deviate the current trend of prices.

It looks like things are starting to stablize a bit but now in 2009, rice is even more expensive. NFA rice was supposed to be going for 18 pesos a kilo but here in Baguio it was 25 pesos a kilo, now it's around 30- the same cost as higher grades. Personally that makes no sense to me at all. Gas prices have come down and the discovery of oil in Zambawanga has been a blessing. Even though the jeepney fares have come down and will again, I still walk almost everywhere except in rare cases. Ordinary folks are unfortunately always the first ones affected by price hikes and are therefor aware of it. What I wish Pinoys were more aware of is the extreme decline of the environment- people either lack the education or just plain don't care. While I care about the economy, I care about the environment and the grave injustice of animal cruelty even more so. We must join together and help improve all areas of filipino life by educating others and forming more non-profit organizations as well as no longer accepting widespread corruption- the biggest evil of all!
